This study focused on improving the reading ability of Grade I pupils at San Luis Central School, San Luis, Aurora through the use of phonic songs.
The purpose of the study was to identify the reading difficulties of the Grade I pupils and to develop an intervention material to address the gap identified. Post-test was conducted to measure the improvement of reading ability after utilizing the adopted A-Z phonic song and innovative “The Letter-Sound song” as an intervention material.
This study also sought to describe the Oral Reading profile of the respondents using the teacher-made reading passage based from the Phil-IRI scale.
The descriptive method of research as well as pre-experimental type of research was used in this study. The respondents of the study were the 31 Grade I-Matapat learners in San Luis Central School. The 28 letter naming and sounding checklist, the Pagkilala ng mga Salita and Word Recognition checklist, and the localized teacher-made reading passage in Filipino and English were the main instruments in gathering the needed information. The study used descriptive statistics like mean and standard deviation, t-test, and p-value.
The results revealed (1) that there is a significant difference on the pre-test and post-test of the respondents in Alphabet Knowledge which enhanced the reading level of the respondents from Instructional to Independent (2) that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores in Phonological Awareness which elevated the pupils’ reading level from Frustration to Independent (3) that there is a significant difference between pre-test scores and post-test scores in Word Recognition in Filipino and English which developed learners reading level from Frustration to Independent and (4) that there is a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test scores of the tests given at 1% level of significance.
The results suggest that the reading ability of the pupils was highly improved after addressing the reading gap through utilization of the intervention materials. In addition, the result in oral reading proves that pupils reading ability in Filipino was developed as they fall under Independent reading level. However, in terms of the Oral Reading result in English it showed that pupils can read English words but they had difficulty in comprehension which lead them to fall under instructional reading level.
Based from the given results, the researcher recommended that teachers should administer diagnostic testing including literacy at the beginning of the school year in order to know where to start and to develop intervention materials to overcome difficulties of pupils and improved their reading ability. They could adopt or modify the Letter-Sound song of the researcher as an intervention material in improving the reading ability among learners to eliminate non-readers and help every learner become a skillful reader.
