"It is with great pleasure that this new edition of the Handbook on Animal Diseases in the Tropics is dedicated to Professor Sir Alexander Robertson, CBE, LLD, MA, BSc, PhD, DVSC, CChem, FRSC, FRCVS, FRSE.
It was Professor Robertson who inspired the production of the first edition of this Handbook in 1962 under the auspices of the British Veterinary Association and he was the editor for the first three editions. Sir Alexander was admirably suited to this task through his long held interest in tropical veterinary medicine, his experience of veterinary education in many countries, which included advising on the foundation of most of the now well established veterinary schools in the anglophone tropics, and as the first Director of the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine near Edinburgh. The staff of this Centre have again undertaken the bulk of the revision and up-dating of the text of this edition.
The aims of this edition remain the same as those stated in Professor Robertson's preface to the second edition. These are "to provide a concise summary of the more important infections and conditions causing ill-health in domestic animals in tropical and sub-tropical countries, emphasising the special features applicable in these countries in the case of diseases of a wider distribution."
Despite the great increase in recent years in knowledge about diseases of animals in the tropics and sub-tropics, there has been a determined effort to prevent the Handbook growing into a tome. This has inevitably meant asking the authors to strictly limit the material they have presented. In making this selection, it has been the intention to concentrate on those practical aspects which will be of most assistance to the veterinarian in the field, possibly far from alternative sources of information. However, many of the chapters include recommendations as to further reading which will assist those who wish to obtain more detailed information on that particular topic."
