"Generally, the average rice yields achieved on farmers' fileds in Asia are lower than those commonly obtained in experimental plots. Even in areas where the adoption of modern varieties is relatively high, farmers' rice yields are often lower than the known crop potential. The International Rice Agroeconomic Network (IRAEN) was organized in 1974 to allow cooperating scientists from six Asian countries to identify and study factors constraining rice yields on farmers' fields. Interdisciplinary teams of agronomists, economists, and statisticians in each country focus on both biological and socioeconomic constraints.
