Abstract:

The study aimed to determine the effect of education-job mismatch on the job performance of Tourism and Hospitality graduates in ASCOT from 2013-2023. The respondents of this study included 154 Tourism and Hospitality graduates from different school year.

The data were gathered with the use of survey questionnaire including the profile of the respondents such as age, sex and current occupation and the effect of education-job mismatch on the job performance in terms of knowledge, skills and attitude towards their profession. The study's findings reveal that education-job mismatch significantly impacts graduates from the tourism and hospitality program at ASCOT. Out of 154 respondents, a majority experience motivation and morale challenges due to mismatch but still find relevance in their acquired knowledge for their current jobs, irrespective of alignment with their field. Graduates express confidence in applying skills for those working outside their industry. In addition, there is a noted misalignment between career aspirations and current jobs affecting job satisfaction. The effect of education-job mismatch on job performance shows overall satisfaction with professional growth opportunities, continuous learning and effective utilization of acquired knowledge and skills in tourism and hospitality industry.

From the data gathered the researchers recommend that a comprehensive curriculum review is advised to identify and rectify areas not aligned with current job market demands, thereby addressing observed education-job mismatch. The implementation of targeted programs for continuous skill development is recommended to keep graduates competitive in their respective fields. The study underscores the importance of evaluating career counseling services to ensure alignment with individual aspirations and contribute to post graduation job satisfaction. Furthermore, exploring factors influencing job satisfaction and commitment, particularly, aligning graduates career aspirations with opportunities in the tourism and hospitality industries, is emphasized. Finally, the research proposes a longitudinal study track ASCOT graduates' career trajectory, providing insights into the long-term impact of education-job mismatch on their professional growth and success. |
