Summary, etc | Abstract:

Municipal Social Welfare and Development (MSWDO) of Baler caters to services for the Domestic Violence Against Women victims by offering facilities that provide temporary shelter (Baler Crisis Center), protective custody to women in need of special protection, and implementing programs and interventions including counseling process. However, the results and evidence of the said counseling process to the Domestic Violence Against Women victim-survivors are not properly reported as the victims completed the process. With this in mind, this proponent conducted a study to determine the lived experiences of victims of violence against women towards the road to their recovery and reintegration. A duly validated semi-structured interview guide was the main instrument in data gathering and data were analyzed using simple frequency count and thematic analysis model.

Results indicate that jealousy is the number one reason why the victim's partner abused them. Victims experienced bodily pain caused by physical abuse which is the most filed case among victims. They experienced a lot of mental confusion and had distorted thoughts which even led to a mental breakdown due to severe abuse by their husbands based on the results of the interviews. in addition, at the time of abuse, he victims did not feel the physical pain. Instead they were more concerned with how they could survive and it was considered a cycle. Despite these circumstances, victims hide the truth of being beaten up by their husbands to protect their families, but in the end, they finally sought help and left the relationship because of continuous abuse form their husbands.

Re-connection to the family after being tangled with an abusive husband is revealed to be one of the ways to recover a victim of violence. Separation from their abusive husband made their way to love themselves.

Not all victims of violence against women can recover and integrate. To meet their specific needs to be recovered and integrated intervention strategies were initiated like strengthening the referral system to licensed mental health professionals like psychologist and psychiatrist once a victim is showing symptoms that could lead to other mental illnesses. In addition, victim's economic stability as part of their recovery because being separated from their abusive husband and the same time the provider of their family is not an easy decision to victims. Therefore, it is highly recommended that the SMWDO should intensify the conduct of psychological counseling and home visitation so that there will be consistency in the recovery process of the victims. Local Government should hire a psychologist or psychiatrist for MSWDO who will provide charge-free treatment and therapy, especially to those victims who are less fortunate. But in case there is a victim who has not recovered but does not need psychological treatment, MSWDO must provide another counseling intervention for them and home visitations. To ensure the support for the economic stability of the victims, partnerships and linkages with the local government should be strengthened. Lastly, to prevent the increasing cases of mental disorders as a result violence, MSWDO should develop a program campaign for those victims who are experiencing early symptoms of mental disorder. |
