520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc “Some New Additions to This Edition Chapter 1, Introduction, has a list of some well-known geotechnical journals and conference proceedings for reference materials for readers. It also includes a list of the International Conference on Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering since its inception in 1936. Chapter 2 on Geotechnical Properties of Soil has some discussion on the round- ness of granular soil particles and the use of the roundness parameter to determine maximum and minimum void ratio. A modified form of the Kozeny-Carmen equation used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity of granular soil has been added. Chapter 3 on Natural Soil Deposits and Subsoil Exploration now has Hvorslev's procedure for determining the groundwater level. Photographs of rock coring and cored rock samples have been added. In Chapter 4 on Soil Improvement, some numerical tables for the degree of consolidation as related to the pre-compression technique using surcharge and prefabricated vertical drains for radial drainage have been added for ease of calculation. In Chapter 5 on Shallow Foundations Ultimate Bearing Capacity, Meyerhof's original study (1955) on the effect of water table on the ultimate bearing capacity has been summarized. Also added is some discussion of the scale effects on bearing capacity of granular soils. Chapter 6 on Ultimate Bearing Capacity of Shallow Foundations: Special Cases has two new sections added: "Bearing Capacity of a Foundation on Anisotropic Sand" and "Bearing Capacity of Inclined Continuous Foundations Subjected to Normal Load." Chapter 7 on Vertical Stress Increase in Soil has two new sections added. They are "Symmetrical Vertical Triangular Strip Load on the Surface" and "Vertical Stress Increase Below a Circular Area with Parabolic and Conical Loading." Several new tables for calculation of stress below a rectangular area on Westergaard material have been added. Chapter 8 on Settlement of Shallow Foundations has a new section added with examples of soil improvement techniques by reinforcing soil with geogrid, geocell, and hollow modular blocks to enhance bearing capacity and reduce elastic settlement of shallow foundations. Chapter 9 on Mat Foundations has some new homework problems, as is the case for other chapters. Chapter 10 on Uplift Capacity of Shallow Foundations and Helical Anchors is a new chapter. In Chapter 11 on Pile Foundations, a brief description of the failure surfaces in soil at the pile tip assumed by various investigations is added. Also added are the ultimate bearing capacity factors at the pile tip given by Janbu (1976) and some field test results of pile groups in clay. Chapter 12 on Drilled Shaft Foundations now has the procedure suggested by Ladanyi (1977) for design of drilled shaft extending into rocks. Chapter 13 on Foundations on Difficult Soil now includes the compaction requirements based on climatic rating for construction of foundations on expansive soil. Chapter 14 on Lateral Earth Pressure now includes a section for estimating the Rankine active pressure for lateral movement of a wall with granular backfill. Several new tables for lateral earth pressure coefficients (active and passive) have been added. Chapter 15 on Retaining Walls has a new section on the equivalent fluid method for determination of earth pressure. Chapter 16 on Sheet-Pile Walls now has non-dimensional tables for estimating the depth of penetration and maximum moment for cantilever sheet piles penetrating into sand and clay. Chapter 17 on Braced Cuts has a section of lateral earth pressure envelopes for cuts in sand and clay as suggested by Tschebotarioff (1973).” -- Preface
