Summary, etc |
"This book is the proceedings of an international seminar on "The Management of Agricultural Resources", held in Taipei, Taiwan ROC in September 2000. The seminar was held to address the problem of the continuous decline in quantity and quality of the world's agricultural resources, and also to commemorate the 30th Anniversary of the Founding of the Food and Fertilizer Technology Center.
The Center is an international information center which serves small-scale farmers in the Asian and Pacific region. It was established in 1970 in response to a regional shortage of both food and fertilizers. During the past 30 years, Asian agriculture has become much more productive, mainly as the result of the Green Revolution based on chemical fertilizers and pesticides, and improved high-yielding varieties. Because of this, the widespread food shortages and famines which were anticipated by many scientists thirty years ago in fact never materialized.
Thirty years on, we are beginning to see that intensive monoculture based on agrichemicals is not sustainable in the long term. We are also seeing increasing competition for land and water between the needs of industry and the needs of agriculture. What is needed is not only agricultural technology which maintains the resource base, but policies which meet the need for food security and rural prosperity. The papers presented in this book discuss the condition of the world's agricultural resources, and policies and technology which are aimed at improving the way in which they are managed. We hope it will provide useful information to both policy makers, and those who are involved in providing practical technology for the region's farmers.
The seminar was co-sponsored by National Taiwan University, and the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan, Taiwan ROC. Its success was largely due to the energetic and efficient work carried out by the staff of National Taiwan University and members of the organizing committee. On behalf of FFTC, I should like to express my deep appreciation to these dedicated scientists, and to all those who have worked to further the mission of FFTC over the past thirty years."
January 2001
- Torng-Chuang Wu
Director, FFTC |
