Part I. Psychology and the individual. – Part II. The dynamics of behavior – Part III. Applied psychology.

"Psychology is one of the most interesting and stimulating subjects a student can take in college. Nothing else, after all, has such immediate personal relevance as the phenomenon of human behavior, and psychology, as a study of behavior, sheds light on people's modes of reaction to, and interaction with, their environment. Given the inherent excitement of the subject, there should be no reason for an introductory course in psychology to be dull and boring.

The major purpose in writing this book was to come up with a textbook for Filipino college students which will not only provide them with the scientific basis of behavior, but will also reveal to them the relevance of psychology to everyday life. In preparing the first edition of the book, we were faced with the problem of adequately covering the subject matter while keeping the length suitable for a one-semester course. After careful analyses of materials in contemporary psychology and the educational needs of introductory psychology courses for Filipino students, we arrived at the topics contained in this book. There was no attempt to be all-inclusive. This second edition retains these topics, but in a different sequence.

Introduction to Psychology is divided into three parts composed of thirteen chapters: Part I, "Psychology and the Individual"; part II, "The Dynamics of Behavior"; and Part III, "Applied Psychology". Chapter 1 of Part I covers an introduction to psychology as a science. This is followed by Chapter 2 which discusses the development of an individual and Chapter 3 which presents the various bodily mechanisms which underlie behavior. Part II, Chapters 4 to 11, covers the dynamics of behavior: perception intelligence, motivation, emotions, learning, thinking, personality, and adjustment. The last two chapters, Chapters 12 and 13, deal with applied psychology: social behavior, and industrial psychology and organizational development.

Instead of incorporating the references and the glossary of technical terms in each chapter, we have consolidated the bibliography and the glossary at the end of the book, for easier reference.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to all who have worked with us in one way or another in revising and integrating the book."
