Unit I the challenge of change – Unit II the challenge of the present – Unit III the challenge of self – Unit IV the challenge of society – Unit V the challenge of the creative impulse.

"This book is designed for use in Communication Arts II (English) for today's college freshman. It is dedicated to the ever-growing need for the college student to keep on refining the language skills he has learned- listening, speaking, reading, and writing.
The focus of this text is to equip the student with adequate skills to meet his writing needs in college, and hopefully, beyond. While writing is its focus, it keeps reinforcing the skills in reading, listening, and speaking. Hence, it is an integrated approach to the challenge of expressing concepts learned with added depth, writing on topics of a broader range, using more difficult vocabulary, and tackling more demanding readings through increased ability to communicate thoughts and feelings in unified, coherent, emphatic, and complete units.
Aware of the inevitability of challenge in all phases of life, the authors have presented the material through five streams of challenge: The Challenge of Change, The Challenge of the Present, The Challenge of the Self, The Challenge of Society, and The Challenge of the Creative Impulse.
Unit I leads the student through the complexities of the principles of effective paragraph writing. Unit II builds upon the first unit to lead the student through the difficulties of developing the longer composition. Unit III escorts the student through the intricacies and refinement of various sentence structures on through Unit IV, the synthesis of an intellectual inquiry in a step-by-step development of a research paper. Unit V inspires the student to explore the manifestations of the human creative impulse through the wonder of literature.
The starting point of the text, however, may vary from teacher to teacher, or even from class to class, depending upon the teacher's goals, the students' abilities, and the syllabus requirements. The unit approach makes it possible for each teacher to determine the order of presentation best suited to the particular needs of a class.
Like the first textbook, Competence in Communication I, to which this book is a sequel, Competence in Communication II exposes the student to more patterns of communication in a systematic way. Care was taken to make content and skills blend in manageable wholes-from the prose reading selections to the literary selections, the reinforcement of concepts and values is evident.
The authors hope that their colleagues will find in this effort an answer to the need for materials in the teaching of writing."
