"The worldwide interest in vegetable crop production has continued to increase and, because many of the crops are produced from seed, the activities related to seed production and advances in seed technology have also been maintained. The first edition of this book was published in 1985 and the need for a second edition has been acknowledged.
The first six chapters of this volume attempt to bring together the diverse information relating to the vegetable seed industry. This is followed by Chapters 7-16 which deal with the production of the most important vegetable species, according to their botanical classification. There is a bibliography followed by an appendix, which provides the addresses of the seed-related organizations referred to in the text.
The book is largely based on information acquired by the author when involved in vegetable seed projects and associated training programmes in developing countries, as well as teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students in the UK. The text is therefore designed for use by university and college students, technicians, practitioners and those who find themselves involved in vegetable seed programmes in temperate and tropical regions of the world.
It is my pleasure to thank vegetable seed producers and vegetable growers throughout the world with whom I have come into contact and I acknowledge the information gained from visiting or working with farmers, technologists and research workers. I am grateful to Professor Leonard Broadbent who suggested that I write the first edition and to Mr A. Fenwick Kelly for encouraging me to produce this second edition.
I thank CAB International, the publisher of this second edition, with special thanks to Mr Tim Hardwick, Miss Ali West and their colleagues for their patience and kind assistance during the writing and production. I also thank Chris George for helping me to catch up with the times by improving my word processing skills. Finally my appreciation and thanks to my wife, Audrey, for tolerating my many overseas missions involved with vegetable crops and seed industry development and her lasting patience during the preparation of this book." -
Raymond A.T. George March 1999, Bath
