"One of the weather realities in the Philippines is the occasional to perennial occurrences of calamities like volcanic eruptions, floods and droughts. The degradation of our environment has been pinpointed as the cause that has exacerbated the yearly occurrence of the latter two. Through the years these three types of calamities have caused various losses to Filipinos in the form of damage to crops, properties, and even death.
This book seeks to address the problems brought about by floods, drought and volcanic eruptions. This is approached through a deeper understanding of the roots of each of the three calamities then highlighting solutions extractable for research and development. To ensure a comprehensive treatment of the problems and issues arising, policy initiatives are also included.
This book is the proceedings of a national symposium/workshop founded on areas that are subject to the risk of floods, droughts and volcanic eruptions. The workshop was organized by PCARRD and co- sponsored by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA), the Department of Agriculture-Bureau of Agricultural Research (DA-BAR), the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and the Foundation for the Philippine Environment (FPE), the National Disaster Coordinating Council-Department of National Defense (NDCC-DND), and the National Mapping and Resource Information Authority- Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NAMRIA-DENR).
It is hoped that this book can contribute significantly to the continuing search for solutions caused by floods, droughts and volcanic eruptions including mitigating measures."
