Basically, SQL stands for Structured Query Language which is basically a language used by databases. SQL is the standard language for Relational Database System. All the Relational Database Management Systems (RDMS) like MySQL, MS Access, Oracle, Sybase, Informix, Postgres and SQL Server use SQL as their standard database language. It has been around in some form since the 70s and is just about as ubiquitous as data management itself. In order to get the most of the mounds of data they collect, many businesses must become versed in SQL. Now into its third decade of existence, SQL offers great flexibility to users by supporting distributed databases, i.e. databases that can run on several computer networks at a time. SQL is used in health card, business (inventories, trends analysis), and education. It even has applications in the defense industry." -- Provided by publisher
