"Seed is the basic input and is carrier as well as the catalyst of agro-technologies for the crop production and thus, the future of agriculture. Seed has a crucial role in ensuring the food security for million at global level. The benefits of new or improved crop varieties and hybrids can only be achieved if their genetically true seeds are produced, tested for quality and are made available timely to the commercial crop producers. Therefore, this book deals with a practical approach and knowledge related to biology of seed development, seed production and testing technologies. Principles underlying the development of new varieties or hybrids and production of their genetically pure seed for various agronomic and vegetables crops and even of few forest trees have been comprehensively discussed. Procedures of hybrid seed production, seed conditioning and quality testing of produced seed have been explained to the point. The knowledge regarding seed storage, deterioration and vigor, development of a seed programme and seed legislation along with examples of seed laws and rules of two major crop producing countries (USA and India) have been narrated. Bibliography at end of each chapter to pursue a particular subject further and glossaries related to seed production and testing have been provided.
With basic crop production knowledge, the use of the book to the seed producers, seed production officers, seed processors, seed analysts, agricultural administrators and extension workers is easy. Contents related to seed production, conditioning, storage, testing and seed program development covered in this book is student friendly and is of immense value to those who opt for seed production and seed testing course(s). Suggestion regarding the improvement of the book will be highly appreciated."
