"Weather is a major factor significantly influencing agricultural production and development, not to mention that it is hard to control and manipulate. Meteorological data if properly collected, analyzed, interpreted, and disseminated can be an important resource for improved agriculture. Application of meteorology to agriculture with the end in view of strengthening the services of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) should be the concern of everybody, e.g., meteorologists, agriculturists, planners, re- searchers, and farmers. The transfer of meteorological knowledge and technique for agricultural production, like agro-climatic analy- sis for zoning, presentation of climatic and agronomic data, and forecasting for agriculture is an important step to address the abovementioned objectives.
The PCARRD joined efforts with PAGASA, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), and Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in cosponsoring the forum-workshop to enable meteorologists, agriculturists, and other sectors to be more aware of the importance of climate and weather to agriculture. This workshop aimed at discussing agroclimatic forecasting and developing a framework for the R & D program for agrometeorology.
This volume is a documentary of the Forum Workshop on Strengthening Meteorological Services for Agriculture con- ducted on 1-3 September 1986 at CLSU, Muñoz, Nueva Ecija. It is a comprehensive account of various applications of agro- meteorological information to agriculture and contains the Re- search and Development Program on Agrometeorology for the next 5 years. Hopefully, this volume can be a valuable reference in the identification of technological and research needs relevant to the development of meteorology for agriculture."
