"This Handbook of Field Crops Production is a pioneer book because of its organization and approach. It is developed entirely on the basis of the jobs which crop growers, present and prospective, must perform or supervise. The Introduction on how field crops grow is unique, in logical sequence, important steps to take, or decisions to make, in connection with every crop activity discussed. The subject matter is basic and applies in all sections of the country. Both managerial and operative jobs are included. Desired information can be quickly and easily located throughout the book. This should prove helpful to established farmers making adjustments in existing field-crop enterprises and to young farmers starting to develop an agricultural business.
Contents of this handbook have been assembled from many published articles and from the unpublished experiences of scientists and farmers. Only material, however, which was believed to be pertinent to the activity under consideration has been included. It has been arranged in chronological order, according to the way the crop grower needs to study his enterprise, as well as according to the successive steps in the development of the crops themselves in the field. All the major crops of the country have been included, and in the various chapters on seed selecting, planting, cultivating, and harvesting, the essential features of each of these activities are discussed for all of these crops.
Recent advances in our knowledge of plant growth, crop improvement, soil management, and seed storage have been given consideration. The march of progress in plant science is rapid. It is the objective of this handbook to summarize the latest finding of research in a readable form for use by the practical person on the land.
In addition to the actual work, of producing crops in the field, consideration has been given to methods of harvesting and storing crops. Much is done that either improves or lowers the quality of a crop at harvest time. Proper storage is important. Attention is directed to marketing procedures."
