Diversity and carbon stock of tree species in Brgy. L. Pimentel, San Luis, Aurora

By: Material type: TextTextPublication details: Aurora ASCOT 2023Description: illus. x, 62 pagesSubject(s): Summary: The L. Pimentel is one of the Barangay in the Municipality of San Luis, Province of Aurora. It consists of agricultural area, mountains with dense vegetation, rivers with clean water, and amazing waterfalls. The L. Pimentel falls and river channels provide continuous water suppy for households and for agricultural crops in lowland area. The tourists visit L. Pimentel because of its two waterfalls the Caunayan and Tabon Falls which water source is came from the forest area in upper portion of the said barangay. The study focused on the ecological parameters of tree species in order to identify the conservation status, the abundance of the species and to determine the distribution per species. The study also determines the carbon stock of tree species in order to identify the conservation status, the abundance of the species and to determine the distribution per species. The study also determines the carbon stock of tree species found in the area using the diameter at breast height and above ground biomass (AGB). The procedure of the study starts from the courtesy call in Local Government Unit of L. Pimentel for permission to conduct the study. Thereafter, the establishment of one modified transact lines with 2,250 meters length, and quadrats with 30 meters by 30 meters in size are placed in every 250 meters internal with the total of 10 sampling quadrats. The information gathered showed that there are 3 species of tree species belonging to 20 families. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (2022), the Macaranga stonei, which belongs to the Euphorbiaceae, is critically endangered with 24 individuals spread among the 10 quadrats, it is the most prevalent species in the region, and it also has a 69.9326 significance value. In terms of diversity indices, the area’s variety richness is low to extremely low, but its evenness is very high thanks to the homogeneity of the species. The total carbon stock from all species found in the area is 40029.80kg in 9000 square meters, or 44 tons per hectare. The diversity of the area dictates how water supply enough and sustainable for water falls and river channels. The data gathered pertaining to species composition, abundance and carbon stock of tree species determine if there’s decline to its population since there are some extraction of forest resources as well as the opening of forest area in the said barangay.
