R&D agenda for indigenous knowledge systems on biodiversity management and utilization.
"From the very start Filipinos are the beneficiaries of the indigenous system of society that the first inhabitants of the country had fashioned in the manner of their own time and sustained to this more modern realm.
These early inhabitants, today's indigenous people (IP), have left evidence of their culture vibrant with craftsmanship and productive agriculture. They marked and sustained a lifestyle that was attuned to an ever changing environment through their remarkable indigenous knowledge system (IKS).
IKS is understood in the context of its relationship with the changing environment and the cultural values that contributed in the development of a balanced and sustainable ecological system.
The understanding of the IKS can provide the key to a clear perspective in dealing with the inevitable effects of industrialization and urbanization while also achieving sustainable national development.
But much still remain for us, more modern counterpart, to explore the means by which we may fully benefit from the IP's contributions and discoveries. Thus, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) extended its support to PCARRD and concerned scholars to make this publication a reality.
With this book, we hope to achieve an understanding of the worldview and values of Filipino IP with particular focus on their knowledge systems and practices on biodiversity management and utilization. With the identified policy issues and recommendations governing IKS and biodiversity management, we also envision for a better policy advocacy and formulation in addressing IKS and biodiversity management and utilization as well."
