"Very few college students will ever become professional scientists, but all will live in a world governed by scientific principles and concepts. They will have to apply scientific principles to practical problems encountered in many aspects of our society.
A study of earth sciences (Astronomy, Meteorology, Climatology and Geology) is an integral part of the general education of every student. To this end, this book has been designed as a textbook for a non-laboratory earth science course in the general education program of college students, particularly those leading to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Education and Bachelor of Science in Commerce or other related courses.
This book describes the planet on which we live. A study of the earth's crust and its interior, its changing surface including mountains, plains and volcanoes, is included in Unit III of this book. A special feature of this unit is the inclusion of volcanoes found in the Philippines and their dates of eruption.
The third unit of this book considers the earth's lithosphere and its hydrosphere, while the second unit includes the earth's atmosphere. An insight into the physical laws or relationships that determine the state of the atmosphere is part of the study called meteorology. Closely related is the science of climatology. Special emphasis is given to the climate of the Philippines. What may be of interest to many Filipinos is a knowledge about the state of weather modification in the country.
Although a subject of countless jokes, weather predictions, accurate within twenty- four hours (though certainly not perfect), play an important role in our daily lives. In a country where the weather affects attendance in schools, factories and offices, a basic knowledge of weather and climate is useful to every student.
The many years of teaching experiences of the authors of this book reveal the awe and excitement of students when astronomy is taken up as part of the course, Earth Sciences. Astronomy, the study of heavenly bodies, is in the first unit of this book. That the earth is part of a bigger whole known as the Universe is common knowledge. That the earth is one of the nine planets revolving around the sun is undeniable. The planets, together with their satellites, the minor planets or asteroids, the meteoroids, and the comets-all these bodies moving around the solitary star we call the sun, make up the grouping known as the solar system."
